The Mango Farm

The Mango Farm is more than a live music event, it is a carefully cultivated cultural experience rooted in community, intimacy, and the celebration of alternative African sound. Focused on Neo Soul and R&B, the platform creates space for emerging artists to be seen, heard, and deeply felt. Through BAI Foundation’s support, The Mango Farm has grown into a powerful example of how grassroots creativity can evolve into meaningful cultural impact.

The Mango Farm is a live music event designed by Babble Hume & Creators of The South centred around exposing Johannesburg youth to the magic of live music within R&B, African Alternative and Neo-Soul. The event started in May 2024 at Joons Art Bar, a cozy arts-focussed cafe found in Linden, Randburg known for hosting Sip & Paint experiences. Joons Art Bar allowed Babble Hume and Creators of the South to host their events for free within its cafe; and during this time The Mango Farm hosted 6 shows between from May 2024 to February 2025.

During this time, multiple artists would perform on a line-up, backed by Babble Hume; and for many of these artists their Mango Farm performance would be their first time performing with a live band. If you've not heard Babble Hume perform live before, there's a joyous musicality between the band members that breathes a warm and infectious energy and in this lies the magic of The Mango Farm.

BAI Foundation attended their fifth event held on the 25th January 2025, and at this point The Mango Farm was already exceeding the venue's seating capacity by the time the event started and would gradually get more cramped for space as the night went on. Whilst the music, atmosphere and culture was undoubtedly amazing, it also felt like they had reached their ceiling within the space if they wanted to accommodate for more audiences. This is what we wanted to help with, guiding young HEATSKRS with the necessary support to get their vision to the next step so they can increase their capacity for execution and better contribute to their organic creative economy.

HEATSKRS Development with The Mango Farm team began in February 2025. Our goal was to help and mentor The Mango Farm in being able to independently host their event in a wider space that could accommodate their growth in audience demand and production quality. This development included sessions that focused on identifying locations, negotiating with or building your own vendors, defining more roles and responsibilities within their team to adjust to the widening scope of operations. Our goal was to advise and support them with resources to help them implement their vision, without impeding on it. The result of the sessions would be their seventh Mango Farm, their first outside of Joons Art Bar, this time hosted at a warehouse in New Centre in May 2025.

The Mango Farm celebrated its one year anniversary with its first show at New Centre, transforming an industrial space into something more intimately personal. With a design that incorporated soft carpets, scattered cushions, and a circular stage at its centre, the environment invited audiences to sit, lounge, and have more space to fully immerse themselves in the magic of the music whilst maintaining the intimacy of their community.

HEATSKRS Development allowed The Mango Farm to create meaningful work opportunities for their team of youth. Below is a quote from The Mango Farm co-founder on the effect that scaling had on their operations.

"Scaling The Mango Farm allowed us to create better defined job roles. For instance having our own kitchen allowed us to create 2 new roles for previously redundant members. This resulted in the entire team acquiring the skills necessary to run a kitchen for an event at the scale of The Mango Farm. Being able to run our own kitchen allows us to gain the necessary experience that allows us to strategize and improve on ways we can generate income. Scaling also meant that we were able to be in control of the venue and that brought about the acquisition of the skills necessary to manage venues and spaces, by having us in charge of the security as well as the set design we were able to split the workload between the team, this created a set design team as well as a floor managing team which would previously had become redundant at our last venue." - Earldridge Mavata. The organizers has since independently produced three more Mango Farm events since as well as a slew of other independent shows.

HEATSKRS Development invests in the development and growth of youth-led community events and art initiatives.
